Honey
Eating local honey has many health benefits, but it must be unpasteurized to truly benefit. We currently stock Brent Halsall's honey from Greely, Ontario.
All three beekeepers can be found at the Ottawa Farmers market, and are all registered with beekeepers associations. To find out more about the benefits of local honeys, visit www.honeycouncil.ca.
Maple syrup
Available in the store, Maple Syrup from Maple Creek Sugar Bush, just north of Belleville, Ontario.
Maple vinegar is also available, made by Andre Pollender at Cabane du Pic Bois, in the eastern townships of Quebec.
Summer produce
Throughout the season, fresh vegetables are available in the store from local producers. Last season, we were supplied by Rideau Pines Farm, Waratah Downs Farm, and Jambican Studio Gardens.
Old fashioned ice cream
The Piggy Market and Pascale's Ice Cream both started at the Lansdowne Farmers Market at about the same time in 2008. Pascale makes old fashioned ice cream, with a french custard base method. One of those flavours happens to be dark chocolate bacon, and this was the foundation for our discussions. Pretty soon, the bacon ice cream was being made with Piggy Market bacon.
Pascale's Ice Cream is something to be enjoyed, and cherished, because old fashioned ice cream is almost a relic. Pascale also makes sorbet, sherbet, and semi-freddo. But most intriguing of all, Pascale is perhaps one of the few in Canada making goat cheese ice creams. All are very decadent choices to be enjoyed often.
